RESEARCH SERVICES

As part of the well established range of services available to members, the Association can undertake the following types of research, subject to the availability of sources. Most are held at the Public Record Office (now known as the National Archives):

NAVAL OFFICERS

RN Officers’ Service Records (1840-1920
These detail promotion dates, ship and shore postings with appointment dates, plus honours and awards received up to termination of service. Covers those who joined between 1840 and 1920.

RN Officers’ Confidential Records (1885-1930)
A rich source of often very personal material relating mostly to executive officers, paymasters and warrant rank gunners.

RNR Officers’ Service Records (1862-1921
These are sometimes thin on detail but may include promotion dates, and ship/shore postings with appointment dates.

RNVR Officers’ Service Records (1903-1919)
These detail promotion dates for Volunteer Reserve officers who joined between these dates. They also give ship and shore postings with appointment dates, plus honours and awards received up to termination of service.

RN / RNR / RNVR Officers’ Service Profiles
Where an individual officer’s record is not available, a profile can be drawn up from Navy Lists, giving promotions, postings, etc.

Warrant Officers’ Service Records
These are available for some warrant officers for the period 1903-1931.

 

NAVAL RATINGS

RN Ratings’ Service Records
These are available for ratings who joined the Royal Navy between 1853 and 1923 inclusive.

RNVR Ratings’ Service Records
Available for ratings who joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve between 1903 and 1919.

RNR Ratings Service Records
For ratings who joined the Royal Naval Reserve 1860-1955.

ROYAL MARINES' RECORDS

RM Officers’ & Other Ranks’ Service Records
These can be provided for personnel who joined between 1793 and 1915

MEDAL ROLLS
Checks can be carried out to confirm the award of campaign medals to RN personnel during the Victorian period and up to and including the First World War. Please provide the name of the ship wherever possible.

HONOURS and AWARDS
For officers and ratings of the RN, RNR, RNVR and RM, including Commonwealth navies, Merchant Navy, civilian workers and personnel from other services who received any award while at sea.

Details from the London Gazette will be provided if the award is listed.

WW2 CHRONOLOGIES OF SHIPS’ SERVICE
This series of monographs covers over 945 ships, including 21 battleships and battle cruisers, 69 aircraft carriers, 94 cruisers, 472 destroyers, 184 frigates, corvettes and sloops, plus 110 other warships including depot ships. 

Each monograph gives details of deployment, actions, convoy engagements, etc, during the Second World War

 GENERAL RESEARCH
We are able to undertake other forms of research, such as accident, sinking and action reports, dependent on the records available. 

Prices for research into personnel who served in the Merchant Navy are available on application.

 When requesting research, please provide as much relevant information as possible, especially service numbers for ratings and marines where available, to prevent duplication and to enable research to be completed as speedily as possible. 

Basic search fees are £10.00 per enquiry (£7.50 for members quoting their membership number), per individual, plus postage and photocopying, except as follows:

Cases where the information provided is insufficient and a longer search is required, or where early service papers are not available and muster rolls have to be checked

Officers’ Service Profiles may be charged at more than £7.50 depending on length of service
 

bullet

Medal Rolls: £3.00 per name, per medal
 

bullet

Honours and awards:  £3.00 for first award; £1.00 for each subsequent award

Photocopying and postage will be charged additionally at cost

WW2 Ships’ Chronologies: Each ship £7.00 up to five pages (UK and BFPO), 30p for each extra page, including postage £8.00 Overseas plus 30p per page, including postage

General Research: Charges subject to availability of material, and nature and extent of research undertaken

A detailed, itemised invoice will be enclosed with the research material.
Settlement must be made to the NHCRA in
Sterling currency within 21 days.

 The NHCRA is a non-profit organisation and when funds permit
donations are made to naval or maritime related charities
