ASSOCIATION NEWSFrom the Secretary and Publicity
Officer Currently the site is hosting two micro-sites - Leander Class Frigates and The Falklands 1982. These include articles and photos from various publications and private collections. The Leander area is proving very popular with its own area on Facebook, too. Danny is planning a third micro-site on his speciality, RN Communications, with lots of photos and articles already available to go online. The site www.worldnavalships.com is an extensive forum used by researchers and those interested in all things naval. At least one of our site’s articles about Cap Tallies has become the basis of a thread. The value of the site was proved recently to family history researcher Keith Shanks who was, in his words, ‘gobsmacked’ to find a full account of the naval career his great grandfather, Chief Engineer Arthur Hutton Shanks, during a Google search. He says it is difficult to emphasise how much finding the article has meant to him. The importance, too, of The Review as a communications vehicle was proved when the article on George Mack and the destroyer Intrepid, which appeared in edition 21.4, led to the diary and ephemera on which it was based being reunited with George’s medals, which turned out to be in the collection of an NHCRA member. Advertisements: For various reasons we have lost some of The Review’s advertisements over recent issues. Denise Hall, our advertising officer, is striving to fill these gaps but would welcome leads from members. A quarter page costs only £25 per issue; an inside full page (black and white) is £100. Publicity: With UK subscriptions held at only £15 a year, membership of the NHCRA represents great value. Under the editorship of the late Allan Hall the quality of The Review was raised to levels that brought well-deserved compliments from many sources. Our present editor has fully justified the committee’s confidence by maintaining the high standards set by Allan. The more ways we can find to publicise the Association, the better. A free advertisement in Sea Breezes is being followed up with similar publicity in The Great War magazine. Plugs at the foot of articles have also appeared in Medal News, the OMRS Journal and The National Archives’ Ancestors magazine. Richard Taylor
From the Membership Secretary Your committee is keen to increase membership to improve the viability of the Association. Leaflets have been distributed to a number of outlets, including museums and libraries. If you can identify further outlets, including militaria fairs, please ask the secretary for copies of the leaflet. Your help would be much appreciated.
